To our Sin-able Sweets friends, fans, and family. With September upon us, Mount Angel starts gearing up for the yearly Oktoberfest. If you do not know about what Oktoberfest is, it started in Bavaria in Germany in 1810 as a celebration of King Ludwig marrying Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. As the celebration started a yearly tradition, new events were added, from horse races to celebration of Bavarian agriculture. Currently, it is a 16-18 day festival in Munich, typically ending the first Sunday in October. Here in Mount Angel, there is everything from road races (marathon) and peddle tractor races, dancing, and wiener dog races and all kinds of beer and wine. This year’s celebration in Mount Angel is taking place from September 16th through 19th (Thursday through Sunday). The last Oktoberfest was held in 2019, and over 400,000 people were in town during those 4 days. In 2020, with COVID restrictions, Oktoberfest was supposed to be an At-Home celebration the weekend it was originally scheduled for, but then the wildfires had flared up, and Mount Angel was under a Level 2 evacuation notice – no way to have an Oktoberfest, even at home. Oktoberfest-At-Home was postponed and happened on October 3rd.
We love being in Mount Angel during Oktoberfest, we get to see our regular customers in a much different environment, and we get to introduce ourselves to many new people every year to our items. When we opened in 2017, on Oktoberfest weekend, we did not know what to expect. The next year, 2018, we went full on and had a great time meeting those new friends and fans, and 2019 carried on that tradition.
It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that we will not be open during the Mount Angel Oktoberfest celebration this year. With COVID cases still being extremely high, and now both an indoor and outdoor mask mandate, we do not feel it is prudent to be open and still have a safe and fun environment for our employees, our customers or ourselves. Again, we are deeply saddened by making this announcement. Since the announcement that Oktoberfest would be held this year we have been paying attention, daily, to the very concerning rise in new cases, and something that is making bigger news, breakthrough cases. Even though we have continued to mask at the bakery since the mask mandate was first ordered back in 2020, and continued to mask when it was not a mandate, we feel the logistical challenge of trying to serve our customers the best we can, while still making sure anyone who comes into the bakery wears a mask (we still have people that refuse to walk into the bakery while we have a mask mandate in the bakery), and the safety of someone working the door to make sure masks are worn, is not worth the any safety challenges to our employees, our customers and ourselves.
