Good Day Sin-able Sweets Customers.
We wanted to give you a heads-up on what is going on at the bakery. We were closed on Wednesday, and it looks like we will be closed the rest of the week. If you have an order already in, we will be in contact with you to set up a way to get your order as soon as possible. So, what is going on.
I have been working on keeping the bakery going since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. This has included the struggles of working out ways for our customers to get orders to make sure there are enough supplies and ingredients to make all the items we all love. While that doesn’t sound like a lot, the stress of trying to find no-sugar-added items is not easy in the first place, then add in the high quality we demand and our customers have come to expect. There were times when we had just one case of a product and every day I was calling suppliers around the country trying to find even one more to keep us going. Additionally, as we move away from the pandemic the business at the bakery is still far lower than pre-pandemic levels and we’re still not able to afford to add staff to allow me to have any time off. As it is, all 3 of our closed days are spent doing the ordering, website work, bookkeeping, and product scheduling. Add to that the fact that as we move away from the worst of the pandemic, there are far too many people in our country who have taken a dark turn and are now completely comfortable spreading so much hate into many communities that have been under-represented for decades. All this vile hate is something I’ve had to live through twice before in my life and while I knew it had left me with long-lasting scars, this resurgence of hate has had a bigger and more long-lasting effect on me than anyone, including myself, expected. While my mental health the past few months has been in decline, but I have been fighting to keep everything going forward for my family, our customers who we truly appreciate, and especially for myself. However, in the past month or so, things have been weighing on me more day by day, and it has sent me in a serious downward spiral. I saw the impact on my daily life become more serious and I started seeing a counselor and began taking medications to help with these aspects of his mental health to do all I could to keep going. This week has just been a serious flash point, and I am just not at a point where he can function effectively, especially being the one person to run the bakery day to day. I have spent months fighting hard to keep it from affecting the bakery and our customers, but unfortunately this week it has come to that point. Being closed is quite honestly seriously hurting me a lot as I never want to disappoint anyone. I am hoping that after a week to relax and work on things, that next week I will be better able to start moving forward again instead of being in a morass of doubt, fear, self-doubt, and dread.
I do need to say that with the number of civic, sports, and social leaders who have been open and honest about their mental health issues, I sincerely hope you can all understand and I do not make this decision or write this lightly. I just hope that I can regain some of the spark and energy I have had from the day we opened until the day the COVID restrictions required us to sit and discuss “how to we keep open so our customers don’t have to eat crap and cause more health issues”.
